The New Mexico Independent: The Schmidly imbroglio at UNM and what it means

Even though they have to get someone else for the position, I still hope the annual salary for this position is reviewed and adjusted to a more realistic level, well below what tenured professors make.

Morale continues to dwindle at UNM. President Schmidley, the UNM Regents, and all of the upper administration continue to alienate staff by their actions, their arrogance, and their lack of respect for the faculty, staff and students. From the outrageous plans to spend millions on a new Student Success Center to the huge increase in salaries that these same administrators received, to the layoffs of golf course employees, to the fear of losing jobs if anything is said - UNM is crumbling from the inside. Hopefully President Schmidley will step back and have a serious look at where he is pushing UNM - and the regents/administration will step back down to the level of the lower paid staff and see that their actions are impacting the lives of thousands of employees and their families. The stress level is rising, and common courtesy and consideration for staff and faculty would do a lot to ease the tension here!

I fully agree with "avoice". I suspect that most UNM faculty who have been at the institution for well over a decade (or two!), would agree that morale around the institution cannot get much lower. Even in the dark and dismal days of Governor Johnson's reign of Governor NO, matters at UNM were not this demoralizing. They were difficult, for largely different reasons. It would be very, very instructive for the citizens of New Mexico to learn more of the facts (e.g., how the numbers of full-time, tenure-track/tenured faculty for all of the academic units have changed over the past 20 years). In this context, New Mexico's citizens should understand that UNM's "research budget" is by an large almost entirely generated by the faculty, the research scientists, the research professors, etc. What will happen as their numbers decrease?????????
