I seem to remember a whole bunch of right wingers getting their panties in a bunch about Barak Obama mentioning that they "cling to their guns and religion" when times get tough.

Interesting to see the very same people proving him correct.

This same "run on guns" theme was repeated on a couple of the local TV news stations. I think they are all getting weird, but keep in mind that the survivalist mentality has been around a long time.

I don't think it has a thing to do with the election ( Obama says he believes that the 2nd amendment involves a personal right), and more to do with the lousy economy and the increasing number of home break-ins and other violent crime stories.

If you are going to own a gun, apply for a concealed carry permit, even if you don't plan to carry it. The training you get involving the legal aspects, as well as a heavy emphasis on safety is well worth it.

I have to admit, I found the article amusing. Especially this bit:

"When liberals feel uncertain, they gather at Flying Star, drink too much coffee and blog until they feel better.

"Conservatives, I had been assured, go shopping for guns and ammo."

As any blogger in Albuquerque will probably tell you, that first part is a very true statement about how to get oneself out of a funk.

As for buying guns, I actually know one person who bought a gun this year because he's feeling uncertain about the world he lives in...related to the economy. He has a heightened sense of insecurity about what the future may hold and buying a gun has been one way to feel more secure in his home. Talking to him about it brings to mind the conversations I've had with women over the years about buying guns for protection in their homes. So I kind of wonder if the run on guns this article refers to is all about Obama winning...

Tim, I agree. The Journal did not bother to report that the Obama campaign has never given any indication that they intend to change existing gun laws.

I thought it was a great story! There was a similar story in the New York Times yesterday, and AP has one today about gun sales on the rise in Virginia.
