i think that part of the problem is in the appeal process myself. if heartless rapists, murderous abductors where put to death right away this country would not have to house and feed them for 15 or so years. they didn't give their victims 15 years to beg for their lives. get rid of the pond sucking scum. give them what they gave. cold hard death. i went to school with dena before she moved to artesia,nm. we played every day on the play ground. i told her bye and the next time i seen her face she was on the tv. a victim of a horrible crime. i was nine. i am 33 now and still sometimes think of her that is how i came across this website tonight. i wonder if we would of stayed good friends. i am glad that her murder was punished by death. dena and her family deserved to see him pay

I dont agree with the decision. The death penalty was more of a scare tactic to get some people to talk lawyers could say, "You tell us what happened or what you did and we will take the death penalty off the table" for some people that is enough to get them to tell things they might not tell. To be honest though I think that if somebody is given a fair trial and eveidence is presented against them and if it is by jury 12 different people come together and say that person is guilty and they shoudl be sentenced to death then that is what shoudl be done. The person sentenced can appeal and if they did not do it something shoud come up that will prove their innocence they have like fourteen to twenty years to appeal its not like they are sentened to death and they die that day.

I don't agree with this decision, before a violent offender would sit on death row in the prison system waiting on their many, many, appeals they get, while on death row they begin to have a change in life and all of a sudden believe in god and want forgiveness because they now have had their life flash before them. When they were committing their haynes crime, they certainly were not thinking about their victim. Now that they will sit and die in prison, they have nothing to loose, the crime in the prison system will be on the rise and they won't think twice about taking another inmates life or even a correctional officer's life, why because they have nothing to loose, they're already in prison for life, why not continue killing and climb the gang leadership ladder!

Now maybe he can abolish abortion which has killed far more than one person in New Mexico since 1976.

By the way, abolition of the death penalty is a requirement for countries seeking EU membership, so ALL EU countries have abolished capital punishment, not "many" of them. Congratulations to the hard-working abolitionists of New Mexico!

While I am not sure I agree with the Governor, I think he handled this honorably and am proud of the way he, and the legislature moved on this.

As much as I'm glad we are applauding Richardson, the reporters and headline writers -- not only of NMI but other publications-- seem to be failing to give credit where it is due. The GOVERNOR is not really the one who made this happen -- the Legislature deserves credit for forcing the issue. And, most of all, Rep. Gail Chasey, who has sponsored this legislation I believe every year since 1999, deserves a whopping round of applause, too. You shouldn't forget her in your stories!
