The New Mexico Independent: Behind the endorsements: another view

My thanks to you and David for explaining this unfortunate situation for those of us who still work at the Journal and must necessarily refrain from shouting out our own dismay lest we lose these ever increasingly rare newspaper jobs.

These are excellent pieces, David and Denise. But when was the last time anyone who didn't spend their days at a Northeast Heights senior center gave a rat's heinie who the Albuquerque Journal endorsed for President? Do you think the J's endorsement changed the mind of a single undecided voter in New Mexico?

Newspapers have become irrelevant. So are the opinions of the rich people who own them.

    Thanks for the info -

So, now we know the publisher of the Journal is a Republican and will in large part use the Journal to support the Republican Party no matter what.

Lovely - now would someone please explain to me why any Democrat or Progressive or Green should wish the Journal well? Unless Mr Lang sells the paper or passes on to his great reward we are left with what is and what will be a Republican paper. If you buy the Journal or subscribe to it you support Mr Lang's use of HIS paper, the Journal, to be a "spokesperson" for the Republican Party. It really is that simple.

Is there a story about the ABQ Journal's odd process of endorsing PRC candidates? The Journal endorsed District 1 Commissioner incumbent Jason Marks over challenger and friend of the Publisher Tim Cummins. Somewhat surprising until you realize what a pathetic campaign Cummins has ran, how much support Marks has, and how the Journal endorses Democrats when they know they'll win down ballot races. Things are odd because the Journal does not have the endorsement online (like it does for District 3) and it wasn't included in the West side edition of the Sunday paper even though it overlaps with District 1. Endorse but not too much when its a progressive Democrat?

    Denise,
I am sooooooooo happy you and David at the NMI now.

Thank you for explaining this process so cogently. I've always had the feeling that this was how it worked at the Journal. Anyone who has read the paper for years and is even slightly media savvy would've found the predominant pattern.

One of the things I like about the NMI is that the voices here are heard -- even when a reader may disagree.

Thanks for the newspaper history, Denise. I appreciate your insightful articles here at the NMI. What do you think the _future_ of news reporting and newspapers in Albuquerque might be? Apart from the nascent NM Independent, Albuquerque seems a grossly neglected news media market.

PS: I think I might rephrase your headline to "Behind: The Albuquerque Journal endorsements" changing the first word to a noun. ;^)

    Poem to the ABQ Journal:

    Roses are red.
    Violets are blue.
Almost everyone the Journal endorsed in major races lost the election.
    Sucks to be you.
