Sorta reminds me of when President Carter cancelled the B1A program in the late '80s. What he didn't mention at the time, of course, was that the B2 was well along in development. Reagan later restored the B1 as the B1B with lower aero capability, but with the terrain following radar. Although not newsworthy these days, it is still very much in use.
